The Garrod Award is presented to an early-stage scientist from a non-clinical background who demonstrates distinguished contribution to the field of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖ±²¥¿ª½±.
Background
Sir Alfred Baring Garrod (1819-1907) was a professor and physician most known for his major contribution to our knowledge on the causation of gout. He also redefined various rheumatological diseases and coined the term rheumatoid arthritis.
He was also responsible for recognising the difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and for initiating the thread test for uric acid in the blood. He was knighted in 1887 and appointed as Physician Extraordinary to Queen Victoria in 1890.

Who can apply?
- A scientist with a non-clinical background, contributing to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖ±²¥¿ª½± research
- Applications from those at a relatively early stage of their research career are encouraged, and applicants should be within 10 years* of completing a MD or PhD
- A member or non-member, but non-members will need a society member to sponsor their application. You can

- NB: if you have won an award in the last five years, you will not be eligible to enter this award again until the five-year period has passed
*This excludes period not working in research (e.g. parental leave) and adjusted for applicants who have worked less than full time
How to apply
You must submit:
- Your full CV
- 3-5 published papers on a related subject
- An explanation of your contribution to the work
- A sponsor declaration form if you are not a society member
Decision-making process
Submissions will be reviewed by a judging panel based on the following criteria:
- Scientific merit
- Originality of ideas
- Quality of written submission
- Candidate's own contribution to the work
- Candidate’s involvement with BSR
